Cyclone

Playa Paraiso, Guerrero. Mexico circa 1997.
Beyond the fog I could see the palm trees, some still standing, many fallen, and others cracked down the middle, as if thunderbolt stricken. The sand (which I remember being of a tan shade) had this grey corpse shade, and none of the fishermen's shacks were standing.
Beyond eerie, this sunny coastal pueblo was now fully dressed in gray, as if mourning the wake.
A cold breeze was blowing softly, as if lamenting the heavy day. Everything hidden under a thick fog, covering it all, from mountain to shore.
The river was silent, no sound other than the outboard engine, roaring with an alcoholic's cough, the water splashing on my windbreaker, and the waves hitting the hull. It was almost like a Hollywood Vietnam War movie, it was almost as if an incendiary bomb had been dropped, without the corpses, for there was no one else in sight.
My friend Wilson and I had just arrived after a night long bus ride from Cuernavaca. He was a tall, big dude from Central America, think Popeye's "Brutus", but with a twisted sense of humor which remains unmatched. There we were, on this small fishing boat, traveling through the river, as there's no other way to reach Playa Paraiso, or El Dorado.
The fisherman told us a cyclone had hit on the previous weekend, and everyone had fled, ...except for some "crazy hippies" which had arrived just a couple of days ago.
I kept staring at the scenery, waiting to see Rambo running through the dense tropical jungle, or maybe a bright red flare, a smoke bomb, flying up in the air, or something out of a movie, because this was an unbelievable scene.
I lit up a cigarette and remembered just how beautiful this place used to be....
As we began approaching the sand bank, we saw a campfire and a few people sitting around it.
- Those are the only people here, crazy cabrones" said the fisherman. They stood up suddenly, and began jumping up and down, waving their hands, yelling out our names "- Pablooo... Wilsooon" desperately.
Sure enough, that was my friend Alfredo, his brother and a couple of brave ladies.
Wilson and I set up our tents, joined them by the fire, and since there were rumors of a group of girls camping nearby we decided to stay.
The fishermen shacks were all on the ground, the sand was plagued with jagged wooden stakes, flotsam and jetsam on the river and on the lake, the waves in the ocean raised like giants, collapsing in thundering roar, and the fog was ever present, cloudy all day, only interrupted by the eventual drizzle.
...But we found the girls, I had a few cartons of cigs, Alfredo and the other friends were there, and someone bought a Wonder Brad bag full of pot, and a bottle of Mezcal.
Didn't take long for the fisherman to bring his wife and daughters, they set up an improvised kitchen, and now we also had a 3 item menu, which they cooked for us three times a day, so we stayed (and I can't believe it, because it was a shit show, with sand and rain)
I eventually moved into someone else's tent, and some chick moved in with Wilson in his tent, and we were all happily paired up, having irresponsible fun in this tropical paradise-turned disaster zone, but the dreadful light would wait about week or so, before revealing herself and her somber news...

Alfredo played the guitar, we sat and sang around the fire, we had tents, hammocks, cold beer and pop, and eventually some of the locals returned and began rebuilding their shacks (here there are no pipes, there's no power and it's just...rough).
We moved the tents to one single area (for safety), but then, one night, while we were all sitting around the fire, chatting, drinking... we suddenly saw this bright light beam sweeping the beach.
This light  came from a pick up truck, parked across the river. Then we heard the megaphone as it began delivering a short, direct message:  "A cyclone will hit us in about 3 hours, there are buses on their way to evacuate everyone, start crossing the river, NOW! women and children first".
And so the fishermen, their families, and a couple of lost campers began to leave ... and we just sat there.
We were too drunk or stoned to realize what was happening... and then we decided to discuss the issue at hand, and that is when everything went south.
See, whenever you have a hurricane, tsunami, earthquake or fire situation, you don't talk about it, you get the fuck out of there. Pronto! (the fat is on the fire).
But we didn't  ...we just kept talking about whether staying to face the hurricane was a valid moral principle, or not, and a consensus could not be reached.
I had been following the debacle quietly, and quite honestly laughing at the stupid dilemma we had gotten ourselves into. Then, at some point they all became quiet, looked at each other, and that's when Wilson turned to me, and asked the unquestionable question:
"Pablo, what do you think?" (yup, bad idea)
" - I think there is nothing to discuss" I said
and then stood up, and raised a burning bundle of sticks (as if portraying the Statue of Liberty) and proclaimed solemnly "- it is our holy duty to stay and defend this place that we have claimed as ours for so many years. No puny storm can relieve such honorable struggle. Prepare your hearts, your souls and your tents, wrap the pot in Ziploc bags and let's unite, for the night lays before us, the conquest of Playa Paraiso will be ours"
(I was kidding, of course ...but they didn't know this).
The fishermen came and told us we were nuts and by the time we finally sat down to retake the issue all the locals had left... and we were left behind, stuck, tying up the tents in clusters and digging ditches in the sand, with no way out of this hell.
Suddenly everyone began staring at me (something weird happens to people when they're not high anymore...they get...serious about shit, you know?).
"I was kidding" I said, and before they burnt me at the stake (like a Salem witch) I convinced them that "we would be just fine" (of course, I didn't know this).
So we made an even bigger fire, and rolled an even bigger blunt, and while the night was windy and rainy, and the ocean's waves crushed on the beach with thunderous anger... we made it.
The cyclone didn't hit until the next evening... and we were gone.

Julian Boldó 02/16/1974 - 07/23/2008

For those who don't speak Spanish:
This is Julian Boldo, he was one of my very best friends and his early departure has left me mute, holding my heart on my hands, I will miss him and many of us are left making rain drops on our shoes.
One more to be at that playground where we shall meet again
and Strawberry Fields Forever.

So long my friend.

Julian with his daughters Jade and Sabina.

Terrible Tilly

Just a rock
lonely island in the thunderstorm
ray of light for the sailor adrift
always there
storm after storm
wave after wave

I wave from the shore
can you see me?
can you hear me whisper?
would you stop and swim ashore?
I need a beacon
I'm lost
and I'm drowning in my little storm
I guess I could use a lighthouse
just about now

But they've turned you off
blew your candle
dimmed your light
and what do they know?
nothing

I sit and ponder
on my old man and wind and shores
on life and sailboats and whores
and on how time escapes from clenched fists
and on how this world for sailors
is commanded by pirates
who only seek to sink ships
decommission lighthouses
and drown our dreams

I wake up and find myself floating
in a bed of fleurs-de-lis
and I realize the beach is a muse
and waking up to see her
is like a sunbeam of peace and lavender
kiss of laudanum
as I close my eyes and sleep
and float away with the tide

Morning

I feel the breeze on my hair
and I turn my face to see the curtains
white thin veils, dancing on this 5 star suite.

Your tan body is still on top of me
my hands are glued to your hips
and you've covered me in honey dew again
as your nails have slowly carved your name on my forearms.

Impertinent sunbeams find their way to the bedroom
I look at you and I see the light of the day
reflected in your turquoise eyes
locked with mine.

I see your face and I can't believe my eyes
and I see my life depends on your high cheeks
on your full lips, half open
and on your hidden, curare spiked tongue.

Indeed, I'm a slave of the soft peach like cheeks
and of that perfect nose of yours
a nose to make Renoir blush.

Your hair falling on your shoulders like chestnut Niagaras
and on your plump grapefruit breasts
Your perfect pearled smile and your strong thorax
and that perfectly round ass of yours
(to which my hands belong)
are everything I could ever want.

I'm completely ensnared
daydreaming in the rhythmic hammock love you make
as my mind spins in this carousel inside you.

- "Good morning" you say
like a songbird tune, with Latin accents
and hypnotic tone.

I look outside
at the World
and I fall in love again
there is a God, for only he could have painted
this Renoiresque beach
and there is a Devil, and she's sleeping with me
and she knows me by name.

Unforgotten, you remain
cause when I stare at a daisy I think of your sex
diamond veils floating on the early ripples
palm trees making a breeze with their long, green skirts
the Sun bathing your face with its splendor
lighting one more day in paradise
a day that began with the morning
the morning of your eyes.

What are words if not petals and thorns that dress my soul?

7/4/08

4th of July

Today is always an interesting day, I remember that the first time I voted here I had just arrived and I voted for George W. Bush. The guy is passionate when he speaks, and Gore choosing Lieberman was a horrid mistake, look at him now, following McCain. Still, I voted and I went and got my Social Security number and my Driver's License and while I have always been an American Citizen I had never really lived here, but the pride has always been there, as is the love for this land.
I'm in America and I'm an American. I speak English and I fear God. I'm a sinner and a tax payer, my dad was a Korean War Vet and I'm registered with the Selective Service. I'm also Mexican and that's where I was born, and I pay taxes over there too (in case you thought Mexicans don't pay taxes, I do ...twice) then again I'm an exception to the rule.
Today, however is not about me. it is about this Great Nation.
We are multicultural and we love and hate everybody.
We nuked Hiroshima but we love Karate Kid.
We don't agree with how China violates human rights but we love made in Honk Kong.
We volunteer as minute men to shoot Mexicans in the border but we love Cancun and making a total ass of ourselves at any Mexican Restaurant (they even put the pictures on the walls).
We still have racism as a social problem but we cry when the Williams and the Woods and the Jordan's raise our flag up high, against the best in the world.
We dance to Tupac and Garth Brooks and Shakira and we love saying "Arroz con pollo"
As different as we are, redneck is still something no one wants to be... and yet we all watch Nascar, wear sandals with socks, jeans with high heels and chew gum loudly. We not only make the worst voice mail recordings, but we also have El Debarge or the Bee-gees as a ringback tone. We decorate our cellphones with shiny plastic diamonds, put puppies in pink purses and believe that Elvis is still alive, then we mix it all and plaster it on myspace. Who told us that Jessica Parker was sexy? Gabrielle Union is sexy. Still, I've been to many places and it is here where I see most of the children going to school, receiving health care and growing in homes. It is here where I see women leaving their abusive husbands and raising their kids on their own, it is here where I see huge medical and technological advances, it is here where I know I must follow the law and it is here that I've decided to make my home. To me that's reason enough to fight for.
Unfortunately there are some people who live here and yet whose relatives never served in the military, who don't fear God, whose vote doesn't matter, whose Social Security number and Driver's Licenses are only documents that enable them to be here. Even though they don't feel pride or love for this land, quite the opposite: they hate us.
They are in America and some are becoming American. They speak English (really bad I must say) and follow and teach a distorted version of one of the oldest religions in the World, one not so different from Christianism.
I'm a sinner and I can tell you that there are 4 virgins per men in this world and I already had mine and yours too, so if you where told that you would have 20 or 40 waiting for you when you die I can assure that women don't really put out if you're dead, and if they are virgins they also don't wait very long.
Today, however is not about me. it is about this Great Nation.
We are multicultural and we love and hate those who hate us.
If you thought you were hiding and that we don't know who you are: today I'm letting you know that we do, that for us today is September 12Th and that we will never forget. We are just waiting until you step over the line again.
We are multicultural and today we all celebrate, today we remember your coward attack on all of us, today we remember our brothers and sisters and husbands and wives and daughters and friends and cousins and nieces and neighbors serving overseas, and when you see us looking at you at the traffic light, on the street or at the store and you feel that hatred, remember, it is hate, and we know who you are, and you are NOT one of US.

Bill Gates

Today was his last day at work and it's weird to think of him as an Edison.
He changed the way I talk, write, read, work, flirt, buy, watch movies, listen to music, photograph, pay bills and pretty much live.
Now he is out to continue having an impact on many others who are not so fortunate.
Thank you for showing me that you should still come to work, even after having Billions, and thank you for my job and for funding my brother's project to end hunger in underdeveloped countries through sustainable agriculture.
You shall be missed and expected at the Company Meetings at Safeco Field.
Oh and sorry for grabbing all those flashy Visual Studio pens at the product fair in 2002 (I know you saw me grabbing more than my share of those, you were standing right behind me) I told my mom and she wasn't very proud. She liked the pen though, those were kewl.
Word.

Clock

The Moon seems to have been turned off
like a bedside table lamp
I lay in the darkness
as a little boy
and I peek under the bed
and find the monster to be me
my mind.

I make a sail from my lungs
and from heart an engine
put.. put..put
as I go sailing to the depth of my conscience.

I see new colors in the palette of a lady bug
I see a daisy undressing for me
petal by petal
dew drop by dew drop.

Thump by thump by thump
this drum takes me through this world of frescoes
through this water world inside my head
beyond galaxies
beyond blood and time

I see dogs as plush pillows
sheep as beds
catfish air balloons
and an elephant couch

I chase after the bread butterflies
that Alice described so well
and I run through corn sculptures
till I see her eyes and her naked breasts before me
my muse, in my world
to where only LSD would take me years to come

A place Ginsberg and Thompson know so well
Country you have no passport to
where the sky is shut
like the zipper in a tent
and the lid of a pressure cooker
is placed upon our heads

A land where clocks have handcuffed hands
Where people wear fish bowls instead of helmets
where we can breathe water
where we use finger paintings and kisses
instead of words

Where wars are fought with poems
and maps are tattooed on arms and legs
where it is all seen through a lens
in 35 millimeters

Where Mothers are huge cotton clouds
that surround us and embrace us
like a bullet proof down comforter
and a smile capable of heating the ocean
they do, as a matter of fact

Under my bed, inside my head
a world where our tears become tiny little heart beads
that we give away
at every sigh.

Dolphin Crimson

How can I close my eyes and look away
when your face is there, behind the sun
in the kitchen
in the deepest part of me.
When the pain returns in twitches
and warm summer eves sweep me in sweat
when the burning soles tell me to run
and never stop
When the storm is brewing
and my bed is breaking in half
and the headphones can no longer mute this silent scream
this cry for help
this scream in sorrow
this confession
I was wrong
... and like a dolphin I dive, slowly
into the sea

Special Day

There are days that seem endless
there's a war, a fight, a struggle
an internal conflict, an abyss
Then there are special days
when beehives and chestnuts and sunbeams
form a waterfall on your shoulders
while your eyes capture the turquoise Nile
days when you smile
when love pours in deltas
and today is one of those days, Genie
Happy Birthday

Rush 5-31-08 The Gorge

When I was 11 and my neighbor played Permanent Waves for me I became an instant Rush fan. I posted that story some time ago. Through the years I've looked back and realized that he didn't have to take the time to introduce the kid next door to a rock band. That was very nice of him, it showed me that there was more than Queen in this world... I've always wanted to thank them, but thank you only goes so far. At some point you have to pay it forward and last night I was able to do that. Thank you Emmy, last night I was a kid again, listening to Rush for the very first time. I hope that when you become my age you will look back and remember Peart and how life is amazing when you do what you love, then tell your RFID Ear Canal Implanted Chip to play Rush - Snakes and Arrows, Digitally Re-Re-Remastered in 128000Hyper Terabit Mega Dolby X Sampling by Justin Timberlake. The Gorge, as always a reminder of how insignificant we are, when standing before the majesty of the Lord.

Church

After an afternoon nap
the Friday and Saturday night ritual
shoes, shave, iron a shirt, refill the zippo
and soak in Armani

Every weekend night, to the Discotheque
it was my church
or the closest thing I've ever had to one
the high ceilings, the mirrors
the dry ice, the vodka baptisms
the lights

...and you
all of you
sometimes like angelic virgins dressed in white
others with red deviled lips
in black skimpy dresses.

Drunk in lust
high on the lingering aqua net cloud
with pot smelly fingertips from the heaven sent roach
in my car's ashtray
hitching a ride on the Bacardi bat
always buzzing
always on the prowl

Sacrificial lamb between the lasers
or predator in the night lights
our legs and lips and fingers intertwined
sometimes at some cheap motel
on the green at the golf club
my back seat
or the bungalow by the racket club

Sometimes I would stare at your thighs
heaven knows I still do
and think of her's
then her's
and then so many other pairs I've seen before
in a salad of nylons and sheer
it all becomes a blur
and you all become one single perfect pair of legs
as I lay consumed in total apophenia

I miss that sometimes
Christine's, Disco Beach, Barbazul, and Palladium
La Boom, Taizz, News and Kaova
I smile as they become a pareidolia of happiness
of youth, of dreams

My roller coaster of your thong and thighs and nylons
the chestnut waterfall of your hair on your cinnamon shoulders
and the hazel storm of your eyes
have become my straight jacket
my orb
my memoirs.

5/29/08

Excuse me, Ma'am ?

On my daily interactions I believe to be usually polite, at least I try.
I was brought up by a strict Swiss Grandfather who taught me to open the door for the ladies (regardless of age or bra size), stand up and offer my chair, pay the bill or pick up the tab without any room to argument, etc.
It is beautiful, it is like a dance. A man is a gentleman, the ladies acknowledge and it usually ended up in the sweet summer fornication at garden parties amidst endless ice tea pitchers and prosciutto rolls.
...and then, what happened?
am I freaky? do I need to shave more often?
I mean, I know that I dress like I'm 16yo but at least I don't wear long basketball shorts and bright blue baseball hats. Maybe my jeans are too ....cholo style?
Maybe I'm just old and fat and I have issues accepting that, but hey, at least I quit smoking. Still, I don't get why some (not all) of the ladies don't even acknowledge you, glance, thank, nod, burp, barf or bark when you hold the elevator for them or open the door at the local Starbucks for them. Nothing... not even an eyelash....
It's over
Really
I mean it
No more Mr Nice guy, Bitch!
You want to be just like us?
Fine, let's see you fart.
No, not silently and smirking like Rachael Ray.
I wanna see you fart vociferously, loudly, very Prada au contraire.
No?
The skimpy salad and garlic croutons just don't....?
It's OK, eventually you'll wrinkle and then only con artists will acknowledge you.
Me? I always wear Oakley's, remember? Now I got my ipod headphones 24x7 and unless you have a big ghetto booty I'm not even looking.

....Damn that felt good.
Ok, back to being the regular sweet lad I've always been....
ok, I'm almost done, just this last remark, I promise.
Is there truly a generation gap between The View and Sex and the City?
Sarah Jessica Parker looks more and more like Mr Ed

Torero

Your scent on my handkerchief
like your hand on mine
my pillow still has the shape of your head
and I don't want to get up

The steam escapes from under the bathroom door
the satin robe covering the rest of you
your wet hair
your big blue eyes
and those perfect high cheecks
are where I begin
and where I end

Your voice
pronouncing my name with a foreign accent
like your lips
in tangy red wine
remind me of gipsies and fairies
could not have told our story
how many ears it would take to paint your body
how many sighs it steals from me
and how my hands are constantly discovering
and rediscovering you
as my lips find the perfect path
between your breasts and your thighs
covered under my red cape
I'm your bullfighter
your map
and yet so far away

5/26/08

Time

Don't expect a kiss
or a phone call
like a grave expects a body
and don't expect me to touch you
or caress you
like a watch needs to be wind
I'm permanently out of time
and you're temporarily out of touch

I was once expected to be home on time
to call
to take a test and pass
to not complain
to listen to others
to do
to undo
to fly to Florida
to move to a new Country
to get a job
to buy a ring
to be nice
to be polite
to pay my bills
to be ransacked by taxes
to shut up
turn the volume down
to fuck you
and to pick up the tab
...but I've grown up
I got my headphones
to not listen to you
I'm at an undisclosed location
to not see you
I am me
the magician
the sorcerer
the poet
the Faustus
the romeo
he who uses gravity and Gräfenberg
in the teeter-totter of love
I'm your master
as long as I wish to be
you must learn to give it all
and expect nothing
otherwise you will run out of love
before you run out of time
and the clock is ticking

Ferry

Thank you for coming back
I'm flattered, honestly
cause my writing sucks
that's why I write constantly
in opium hopes that someday
by chance
I will scribble something worthy
but this time I'd rather share someone else's words
join me, sit down
shut up and listen.
The guitar? yes, that's Gilmour

When you know the name of the game
You can never play enough ~ Bryan Ferry

5/15/08

Oceanis

Stop.
Breathe.
Look around you,
breathe
you're alive....

Darkness falls swiftly,
barefoot feet
leave footprints on the sand.
I walk to the sea
to the cresting waves,
under the moonlight
on this quiet, summer night.

I see the plankton glowing
in green and blue and purple neon
splashed along the bay.

I then surrender the last piece of clothing
and let my soul escape through my lungs
as I float on the swing of the ripple.

The water, warm and deep
surrounds me and keeps me afloat.
Soon I can no longer hear the music
from the lobby of the hotel,
alone, I've come to be.

I stare into the night
and the sea becomes an extension of space
outer space...
I grab a bucket of stars
begin to draw new constellations
like plankton, space is more than night.

I think of Holst
and take a deep breath
as my mortal remains afloat.
Trying to think nothing
trying not to think of Her
losing myself in both immensities
letting go.

As the current drags me farther away
and as this patch of ocean becomes a womb
I spot a red light, glowing
far, far away.

It wanders aimlessly
as I keep track of it
she seems as lonely as I
with my mind I play calling her
and slowly lose any sense of time,
as I repeat my mantra,
over and over again:
"come, come to me"
"come and take me away"

A few falling stars later
and to my surprise
she gets closer
and closer
and stops right above me
as if looking at me
suspended in mid air.

Mars is at its farthest
and satellites travel in orbital vectors
I know this light is neither
and neither are three more that joined it
playfully.

I stare in awe
in total comfort
they are strangely familiar
like an unknown uncle
I'm nervous, and yet, unafraid.

They come closer
spining in circles
dancing in a slow rhythm
floating above my head
as if communicating with me.

I close my eyes
and feel a little shock run through me
then slowly fade away
into a nap, or self inflicted coma
my mind wanders to outer space
as jellyfish pass below me.
I can hear what these lights are saying
and for a moment, I am taken by them
and time suddenly stops.

Soon enough the waves become an orchestra
then I am suddenly back in the Pacific
in Oceanis, in Atlantis
I open my eyes
and wake up
I have arrived
I have been born
born again
I swim
I dive
I take the deepest breath
and as my feet touch the sand
the red lights vanish into the night.

I'm here
wet, naked
new, erect
I speak three of your languages
and have so much to say and learn
with a certainty deep in my heart
I am from another place
far, far away.

Box

No matter how much I wind my watch
this excuse for a life still goes on
I grasp for air
as I drown in an empty fishbowl
like a plastic bag on my head
or a rope on my neck

Life, like sand escaping from my fists
and darkness slowly crawls up on my bed
death soaks my bath towel
and dried up tears and scars
and bills and I fall on my own traps.
I dig my teeth in my lips
and my nails on my skin
please bring me a box
dig a hole deep enough
for me to never crawl up again.
Here, take my heart
take it to the dog pound
maybe someone will take it
or feed it to the pitbulls
or mop the church floor with it
or put it in a crash test dummy
and send it out to space
make a mask out of it
put it on your face
honestly, I don't care
it doesn't matter anymore.

5/14/08

The Night

Your tongue is a wild lizard
bathing my body in a morning dew
stretched on your oak and satin bed
breathing in desperate cold sweat.
My skin trembles like a leaf under the rain
my nerves twitch in the mischief of your fingertips
lonely satellite, my mind is lost in orbits
tumbling and bouncing in circles around your eyes.
I helplessly let go
as your nylons bring blindfold night to my eyes
and restrain my urge to crush you
in my twisted forearms.

Marta

When I couldn't speak
she played Dvorak and Vivaldi
When I began to grow up, she was there
every step of the way

When puberty came along
she let Ipanema and Copacabana teach me
and they taught me well
and when I loved for the first time
and my young heart broke
she left me alone, for I locked myself up for days
at a hotel room in Buenos Aires
a few days later she gave me Garcia Marques

When I got into fights, even those I shouldn't have
she told me to hit harder
"cause you have lot's of Mother"

When I needed support and care
she would be an ocean of love
she still is
and then she showed me Octavio Paz
Picasso, Jesus and Van Gogh
Guayasamin, Aleijadinho and Renoir
she taught me to treat everybody the same
where I'm from and who I am
and how freedom
and the freedom to pursue love
is a right worth dying for
she taught so well
I find myself doing things like her

and while all this learning
and nurturing
and growing up happened
she always took the time to stop, and stop me
to look at my surroundings
listening to silence
admiring the majesty of forests
mountains, clouds, people, flowers
how the beauty of the Universe implodes
into just one single petal
into just one single moment

She's the saint that raised a devil
that from her love grew wings
not just my tutor and my guide
simply put she's everything.

"Because I feel that, in the Heavens above,
The angels, whispering to one another,
Can find, among their burning terms of love,
None so devotional as that of "Mother"
- Edgar Allan Poe

Drunk Butterflies

Like a sailboat sinking in St. Augustine
I feel lost and the streets look all the same
my arms, like oars
tired from rowing
for there's no wind on my sails

Is that a windmill or a monster?
should I face it in battle?
should I destroy it or die trying?
for pride was the first thing to walk away
defeated, for I'm my own saboteur

Nothing left to face
other than the everyday mirror
there's a face in it's reflection
dauntingly familiar, as is its voice
repeating that I am still alive
to look in my heart

....and I did, just now
It was a jar full of fireflies
drunk butterflies
saying your name between hiccups
I heard them, when I opened it
and saw them fly away
maybe I shouldn't have....

Jimi Hendrix

In this life you can decide to change history by using guns, ruin someones life with a knife, infuse freedom using a beret, make someone fall in love by writing a poem, do nothing, or make people's souls look in the mirror through music, which is what Hendrix does. He changed us with a set of hair curlers and an electric guitar. His adversity, tenacity and virtuosity live forever in my heart.
Hendrix didn't turn water into wine, but he showed me 6 was 9. Since we are in the same neighborhood, I went to visit Jimi on Sunday.

The Art of Blog (and its practical uses) in the 21st Century

Other than writing your most private thoughts, your love life, political affiliations, porn, nationalistic tendencies, thoughts you've copied from others, you tube videos, sport results or obsession for an actress... is there a true practical use of a blog? (not that all that shit is useless...but...)
So here's an attempt: I quit smoking and I'm done.
But it's not easy... can some members of this blog's quorum (come on, I know only two people read this blog and one of them is me) be a support group?
Add a comment with your words of support.

Red Box

Lauren called me from the airport
she's going to California for a week or so
we talked and talked
and once again I'm pinned against the wall
why do friends do that?

Why is it so hard to speak truth
no, not just any truth
I'm talking pure, no umbrella
nudist beach truth

Must I move to some Socialist
Third World tropical Country?
speak and write in plain coconuts?
but that's where I'm from, remember?
maybe I'm just homesick

But goddamnit Ernest
I didn't see you at La Bodeguita
what did you find in La Closerie?
If you saw me walking, on the street, you would laugh
a urbanite looks silly pushing a wheelbarrow
more when filled with crystal clear guilt
why am I not laughing?
and why can something so clear, weigh so much?

This life is a skinny puppy sometimes, you know?
and why is it that men go to such lengths
to lie and deny their quest for Pollyanna
and for casual encounters galore

I'm just a crash test dummy
sometimes dumber than others
and sometimes I just plain and simply crash

... and there I go, decided as a mule
to the Radio Shack on Mercer
for ethernet cable and a transistor
and that's where I met your sister

Taxi

Sometimes I refuse to grow up
and I rebel against clock, calendar and world
sometimes I want to give up
and run away
like I've always done

You know I come here to hide
you read me and therefore know
that I don't hide so well
there are many things I can't brag about
other than being myself

I'm always on the taxi cab
that's going the wrong way
convincing myself people know not where they're going
while the god damn meter never stops

I find your wind strengthens my tired wings
then I remember the guilt
how I wish I could make things better and I can't
that's when I realize I have no wings
that's when I realize I have nothing
other than being myself
and I rebel against giving up.

National Record Store Day

What? yes people, apparently today we celebrate record stores (yes, I know it sounds like an inside joke) but I think it's awesome, I mean, someone has to keep up with Country, Trash metal and Rap.... from Lil Crappy Crap Rap to Daniel Lanois to the latest American Idol.
Thank you, oh record store comrades, for joining the cause, for stocking the shelves with Zeppelin, Bowie, Queen, King Crimson, Robert Fripp, Roxy Music, JEFF Beck (and now you can imagine the rest) and not leave us with U2 and El Debarge as the only alternative choices.
Greetings to all that leave me broke in my fav record stores:
Everyday Music - Seattle, WA
Hi-Fi - Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
Mixup - Mexico City
Dedo Gordo - Cuernavaca, Mexico

What about Sonic Boom and Easy Street Records? (too much attitude, same goes to the Apple Store in Southcenter) you're not skinny, skinny, skinny androgynous baristas making magik xpresso's on the hill, so chill.
Worst album I ever bought? Star Wars by Mecco (hey, I was 10)

Mexico vs China at Qwest Field

4/16/08 Seattle I had been waiting for this for a while now, I've been here for almost nine years now and it's about time. I finally got to see "El Tri" The Mexican national football team live, with Genie. Almost 10 years ago I saw them defeat Brazil 4-3 at Estadio Azteca, Mexico City 08/04/1999. Today I got to see Mexico vs China, here, at Qwest Field. The game was ....good pace but it was mostly China taking some soccer lessons from a Mexico that couldn't turn their tactics into results, sometimes random. Mexico 1 - China 0. How did it feel? like the Match of the Century, since I hadn't seen Mexico play in so long, but it was far from a Fla-Flu or a Roma-Juventus. The Stadium... now THAT was cool as shit. I expected to see a fourth, maybe half of it filled with a Mexican crowd, heck I was even wondering if my tickets would be close to the largets group... and Oh My God Cabron, we almost packed it (just wait a couple of years, in 10 we will fill Qwest and Safeco). Qwest Field looked beautiful in Blanco, Verde y Rojo and for the first time Seattle truly felt like home (I knew this would happen sooner or later). Can't wait for a Sounders game

Boa Viagem

This one is going to hurt. Just the thought of scraping the surface of this life (inside a life) is daunting, frightening, heart wrenching.
I can see it ripping apart already, tearing at the seams. It feels like a tear but it looks like blood, dripping from an open wound.
No, this is not like a failed romance that I can write about, following the usual process to expel pain from my heart, to abort it for once and for all, to extract it like a bullet trapped in the ribs.
No, this is not something I can amputate, and I wouldn't if I could.
Brasil is mixed in my blood, tattooed on my skin, embedded in my brain. Brasil is half of my soul and Boa Viagem is half my heart.

Recife is an old city, situated on the coast of Northeast Brazil, with some old buildings along the Capibaribe and Beberibe rivers, in classic Dutch architecture, with pastels everywhere, Founded as a  Dutch colony, then controlled by Portugal, known as the Venice of South America, this is the most important city and port in Brasil's Northeast.
I was fourteen when I moved from Rio. First to the old part of town, at Rua da Aurora street, it was here that I met Fabio Craveiro (son of famous journalist Paulo Craveiro) and Daniel Zimmerman. They were to become my first friends in Recife (Daniel and I remain friends to this day).

I was completely and absolutely lost. I didn't speak Portuguese fluently yet, and I missed my father terribly.
We lived on the 21st floor and had a full view of the city. From the living room I could see the Ilha do Governador (Governor's Island), with another body of land in between, bridges crossing both rivers, across from my apartment.
My stepfather had a really busy schedule, always in campaigns for his political party and my mother went with him most of the time. I was left to the care of a couple of maids, and these two friends. My mother eventually signed me up at the American School where I was able to continue studying, since all classes were taught in English plus an hour of Portuguese daily.
The school was (and still is) in the neighborhood of Boa Viagem, a suburb by the beach where the beachfront 5 Star Hotels and luxury apartments stand side by side, row after row.
I remember it used to take me 4 hours to get there on the school bus, each way, everyday. We eventually moved to Boa Viagem and my life would never be the same.

We were 2 blocks away from the beach and pretty close to the Shopping Center. The best part was the view of the Atlantic from my bedroom. Suddenly I wasn't lost anymore, I was nicknamed and became popular in a matter of days, life had gained a brand new meaning. After all, nothing chases away depression like a colorful bikini smiling and squinting at you.
As I grew up into a young man there were several people whom had an influence in whom I've become, my lifelong brother-like friend Gutty, "MaryPop", Alexandra (schoolmate and ex-girlfriend whom I can only describe as Brazil in the shape of a girl. Gamelao, Caca and Paulina (do Transatlantico) who showed me Olinda.
This is the city where I grew up to become a man, where I met people who opened their hearts to immigrants and make them feel at home, who made me feel as part of their family and whom I embraced as my own.
I haven't been to Recife since 1989, and yet I still remember so many little things. I recently reconnected with Rafaella and other friends, it's as if it where yesterday. Gutty is still there... maybe one day, maybe next year...

Eclipse

Some late summer afternoons
I feel the cool breeze messing up your hair
messing with my messy thoughts
when I see your face and your naked shoulders
laying on a pillow
on the white sheets on my bed

then I throw myself on top of you
and there's no room for air between our bodies
that is when I know
I know it all

that is when you look like someone else
every woman does
sweeter, younger
innocent, immaculate
like prey
or maybe it's the rush of blood to the head
or the different angle of vision
but a woman in that position always does

she under my chest is all the stars
suns, moons, super novas
the universe, a flower

life eclipse
equinox death
infinity in your sugar frosted sex
as your eyes reveal to be the source of life
and your breath the air I breathe
your soft breasts under my hands like snowed peaks
as I sleep on your stomach
my tundra, my plateau

then I swim and I bathe
and I drown and drunk I drink your endless waterfall
I devour you all, plump and peach
and then you disappear me in the night
with your spells
with those petals
you call hands.

I'm moving again.....

After a year of living in Lake Union I'm moving to Renton. It has been an experience and the Hill will continue to be my hood, as I won't stop grabbing my latte's at Vivace, sunbathing in polka dot speedo's and prussian winter camo beach towels at Cal Anderson Park, buying CD's at Everyday Music and eating at Charlies. As a result I have renewed my membership to Castle (yes, the super porn store) for the next 5 years.
Still, I'm looking forward to Renton and the camaraderie of a good friend and roomie.
Also I'm looking forward to having Washer and Dryer in unit, SPA, gym and covered parking at no extra charge.

Sand in the Vaseline

Salty water splashing on my face
Sometimes in Puerto Marquez
Sailing a Hobie Cat to the sunset

Cool breeze
warm instant coffee and coffee mate
on the deck of a 41" Morgan
another lazy morning
at the clubhouse in the yacht club

It all makes sense and doesn't
on her cinnamon skin
scent of coconut vodka
sand where it shouldn’t
my hands discovering a tropical island
in her bright yellow swimsuit

Life happens
and changes and storms and time
and realities and dreams are never what we wanted
cold water splashing on my face
get up; it's time to go to work
I only get to daydream in a 5 minute latte
before it's too late

Don't think love is forever
happiness is random and sporadic
and life keeps pouring minutes
on the death clock and her hours
for timeless is the buoy
and endless was her skin
don't think it's forever
my mind betrays
and I'm slowly drifting away
back to the coconut sands
to the vodka mango
to the island I once left behind
so much for a $5.00 latte
I better get to work on time.

Rush

Cuernavaca, Mexico. Circa 1981

It must have been on a weekend, probably Saturday, because I didn't have school that day. It was late morning and after a hearty breakfast I went out for a ride on my bike. I noticed how the pool seemed inviting, the red bugambilias in full blossom adorned the landscaped gardens of this one story house, located in the neighborhood of Rancho Cortez, which is in the north part of town. Spring was here and the mountain air brought a cool breeze, how I love Cuernavaca, particularly this side of the City. I was on my way to my schoolmate Neils Hinke's place, when I heard my neighbor calling my name. Him and his wife were a cool couple, they must have been on their late twenties back then, I remember I was just eleven. I don't remember his name but I do remember he was into cycles, I think he had a Kawasaki. He was also a Queen fan, I him and his wife found it strange that a kid my age liked the same music they did, like Baez, Joplin etc.
He had bought a new LP and wanted me to check it out, so I came inside.
His wife brought some cookies and coffee or something as he opened a drawer and proudly placed this new record on my hands, it was "Permanent Waves" by "Rush".
Who? I had never heard about them. He played it on a not so fancy record player, yet, their sound was so unique, while it was Progressive it was like nothing I had ever heard before. At that moment I became an instant fan, and remain until this day.
Betsy and I saw them for the very first time in 2004, on their R30 Tour at the White River Amphitheatre in Auburn. I had waited 23 years and it was well woth it.
As the lucky SOB I've always been, I now get to see them in May at The Gorge, on their Snakes and Arrows Tour, with Genie and her daughter Emily, and I can't wait.
I will be eleven again and remember how I went out and bought that record that very same day, years ago.
The cover art for Permanent Waves is also one of my all time favs. Gotta love a cotton-clad mons pubis Donna Reed amidst a chaotic flood, I mean, that panty peek-a-boo is heavenly yet Kafkian in an absurd and delicious way, just like Rush.

Lasagna Vaffanculo (anno Domini 2008)

Sometimes friends gather
in fellowship, in amnesty
in exile or in revolutionary
support full of activism
and sometimes they just gather to be
Saturday night they gathered again
some for the first time
welcomed, all
under the poster plastered semi vaulted ceilings
bringing back twisted nostalgia
of the urine smelly Sixteenth Chapel

Sophia and Lollobrigida in murals
a headless Pope Jean Paul II turned
and turned in a lazy Susan
as my friends came together
and after warm Chianti
convinced me to confess my true age

I thank them all for coming
and I remembered all of those
who couldn't be there
I raise my glass
and bow before gnocchi al telefono
for what little I know about life
I remember people like to hold people accountable
therefore you left me no choice
other than to proclaim myself
as truly, totally
and irremediably irresponsible
we are just here to remember.

39

As much as I have lived
which is far more than 39 years
as much as I've loved
which is far more than I can count

As many friends I have
they are very few
so I can love them all
yet it really all comes down to just one thing
Brazil

Everything I've written
is mostly bad
all the places I've been to
I can never wait to go back

All the rum and tequila
the spicy peppers
the rush of shrooms
the lounge high of Acapulco Golden
or a night at "El Baby"
are still no match

As much as I love that Eagle and that serpent
and the stars and stripes on my two birth flags
the one I've held with tears and sweat
is black and red
like my blood
like my heart
Por Sempre Mengao

For nothing, absolutely nothing
makes my blood boil
like "Samba de Enredo"
in the Boa Viagem Carnaval
at 2am

Dancing, groping, kissing
chasing, hiding, laughing
screaming and silently
and slowly melting
my hands on the cinnamon skin
drunk in the hazel eyes
of the ocean salt covered affairs
in the middle of the crowd

The percussion ensemble
is the Amazonic jungle roar
it's alive
it's an engine
in mathematical fuck rhythms

The classic Fla-Flu soccer match
at the Maracana
Vinicius and the girl from Ipanema
is more than heaven or hell could ever be
Therefore, when I die
all I want is Samba
and a wet, Maracuja laced kiss
Wherever I go, I will make a triumphant entry
dancing, one step at a time
39 so far
and Jesus, what a ride...
